Prepared, Within Reason

September brings the last days of summer, that unmistakable back-to-school feeling, and—somewhat less romantically—National Preparedness Month. This month, I became preoccupied with being better prepared—not for the end of civilization, but for the ordinary disruptions that are considerably less dramatic and considerably more likely. So I tested my emergency supplies, built a proper backup coffee plan, considered which comforts deserve space alongside batteries and bottled water, and looked at what is actually worth having when the power goes out.
