The Just-Right Holiday Gift Under $5

There’s a quiet stretch before the holidays arrive in earnest, and it’s the best time to get ahead. The season brings the perfect excuse to thank the people who make the year a little brighter: the coworker who always has your back, the teacher who miraculously makes Mondays easier for your child, the pet sitter your dog adores, the neighbor who brings in your packages. Once you start counting, the list runs long, which is exactly why it helps to have one gift that suits them all.

This little gift comes together in minutes, keeps for weeks, and costs under $5 a bag, which is kind to the budget when the list is long. Make a batch now and keep them by the door. When December arrives, you’ll have one ready whenever the moment calls for it.

What's inside

Each clear cello bag holds four things:

  • A pair of heart-shaped hand warmers. Air-activated, they last up to 12 hours. The heart shape is the surprise.

  • A packet of hot cocoa. Ghirardelli for the nicer version, or Nestlé with marshmallows to keep the cost down.

  • Two sleeves of Biscoff cookies. Each sleeve holds two, so that's four cookies to go with the cocoa.

  • Six butter mints in snowflake and snowman wrappers.

I tied each bag with blue-and-white baker's twine and a paper snowflake tag with a short handwritten note: "Take a break!", "Warm wishes!", or "Happy holidays!"

Putting them together

A couple of minutes a bag. A dozen takes well under an hour.

  1. Slide the hand warmers into the bag first, pink front facing out. The back of the package has the instructions and warnings, so face that side in.

  2. Drop the mints in so they settle at the bottom.

  3. Layer the cocoa packet and the two Biscoff sleeves in front of the warmers' back. That hides the fine print and puts the treats on display.

  4. Gather the top, tie it with twine, and thread on a snowflake tag.

One bonus: the front of the warmer package has its own To and From lines, so the back of the bag works as a gift tag too.

Why it works

A small gift, thoughtfully put together, is one of the nicest gestures of the season.

Everything in this bag is an invitation to the recipient to take a small pause in the middle of the season’s rush: a warm drink, a good cookie, a few sweets to tuck in a pocket, and a pair of heart-shaped warmers for cold hands on the walk home. The colors are coordinated, the tag is written by hand, and each one comes together in only a couple of minutes.

It’s the kind of gift that’s easy to receive: thoughtful enough to feel personal, simple enough that no one feels they owe you one.

I’ve made more than a dozen so far, for coworkers, pet sitters, teachers, and neighbors. They’re also just seasonally neutral enough to tuck into college care packages for our nieces and nephews. And with snowflakes instead of Santas, they suit any winter holiday, and the heart-shaped warmers carry them all the way to Valentine’s Day.
